[Sightseeing and nature in Muroran]
Muroran is rich in sightseeing resources. Cape Chikyu, at the southern tip of the Etomo Peninsula, has continuous sheer cliffs of roughly 100 m and is one of Japan's finest scenic spots with a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean. It was ranked No. 1 in the "100 Natural Sights of Hokkaido." On clear days you can see as far as Mt. Komagatake, and from spring to autumn dolphins and whales sometimes appear. The Hakucho Bridge, spanning Muroran Port, is the largest suspension bridge in eastern Japan at 1,380 m long. By day it draws a beautiful curve against the blue sky, and at night it glows magically with lighting powered by wind energy. The contrast between the illuminated Hakucho Bridge and the factories is the highlight of Muroran sightseeing and was selected as a Japan Night View Heritage site; the views from the Iwaitsu Park observation deck and the Sokuryozan observation deck are especially recommended. Night cruises from the sea are also popular. Local food is plentiful too, including Muroran yakitori (skewered pork) and curry ramen.
[Hot springs]
Muroran Onsen Yurara, about 10 minutes by car, is a day-use hot spring facility next to the Michi-no-Eki Mitara Muroran. Its outdoor bath lets you look out over the Hakucho Bridge while bathing, and it is an everyday place of relaxation for local residents. Noboribetsu Onsen (about 45 minutes by car) and Toyako Onsen (about 45 minutes by car) are also within day-trip range. Having some of Hokkaido's most famous hot springs close by is one of the big attractions for people moving here.
