Description
A late-Edo-period farmhouse (kominka), built in the final years of the Edo era, from a family of sake brewing masters (toji). Previously the owner lived in a neighboring hamlet five minutes away by car, worked as an employee while his wife ran a shop, and his grandmother lived in this house. The house has never been vacant in 150 years. About 25 years ago, the current owner longed to spend his retirement in an old thatched farmhouse in the countryside, and acquired this house out of dozens of candidate properties.
On a trip to New Zealand with his wife to commemorate his retirement, he visited a private open garden and was inspired to create a plant garden. Together with the aim of supplying seasonal tea flowers (chabana) for his wife's tea ceremony classes, he has lived here almost alone from March to December each year, commuting 250 km from Saitama. About 50 guests, including family and old friends, visit each year. Since then he has put particular effort into the garden plantings, and together with the activities of the Kashiwazaki Plant Friends group, the garden has been run as an open garden and was featured in the June 2019 issue of the Niigata Nippo magazine CARREL.
The tea room (modeled on the Tonin-seki of the Urasenke school) has a tokobashira alcove post of black pine with bark left on, and is a four-and-a-half-mat room built in 2004 (Heisei 16). Highlights of the property include the ceiling height, walls, colors, shoji screens, a portable irori hearth (chair-style) with table, zelkova (keyaki) beams spanning 2 ken, and six zelkova daikoku-bashira main pillars, each 24 cm square.
Currently, the bath boiler is broken due to damage from the Chuetsu earthquake (it was not repaired afterwards because, living alone, the nearby hot springs were more convenient). Utilities: a flush toilet and a connection to the main sewer line were installed in 2002 (Heisei 14).

江戸末期築、半野、杜氏の家柄です。当時持主は車で5分の隣部落に住み、勤め人で妻は店経営、祖母が当家に暮らしていました。150年間空家無しです。この状況で25年前定年後の暮らしを田舎の茅葺き古民家でと切望した折に、数十件の候補物件より譲り受けたものです。
定年記念に妻とニュージーランド旅行の際訪れたオープンガーデンの個人宅を見学、植物の庭造りに触発され、また妻が仕事の茶道教室に於ける「茶花」を助勢する目的とあいまって、埼玉より250kmの道程、年間3月～12月をほぼ一人暮らしで常住、時々家族や旧友等年間50名程度の来客があります。以来、特に庭の植栽に力を入れ、柏崎植物の友の活動と共にオープンガーデンとして、新潟日報の雑「CARREL」2019年6月号に掲載されました。
茶室(裏千家の東院席模倣)床柱、黒松皮被り、四畳半代名、平成16年築造、天井の高さ、壁、色、障子、いろり(置き型、イス式)とテーブル、2間に及ぶ欅の梁、6本ある大黒柱(欅)は24cm角が物件のポイントです。現在、風呂のボイラーが中越地震により破損しています（その後一人暮らしでは近隣の温泉が良い為修理をしませんでした）。ライフラインは、トイレ水洗と下水道本線を平成14年に設置しました。
