Description
A small countryside town located between Ueda City and Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen. This is the house where my grandparents spent their later years. My grandmother passed away early, so my grandfather lived alone in this house for a long time. He lived a very regular life: getting up at a fixed time, walking on the hill behind the house, and having one go (a small cup) of sake in the evening. He lived to the age of 94.
The entrance, the 9-tatami Japanese-style room, the kitchen and the bathroom are later additions. The 4.5-tatami Japanese-style room seems to have had a sunken kotatsu in the past. The garden is small, but large enough for a modest home vegetable garden. My grandfather grew tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, loofah, myoga, green onions, shiso, pumpkins and more. Summers in the Ueda Basin are hot during the day, so we sometimes ate somen noodles, and picking myoga and shiso from the garden was my job. I enjoyed going in among the myoga my grandfather grew and picking the flower buds.
In winter there were drafts, and the family slept with their legs under the kotatsu. It was so cold that your breath rose in white clouds as you slept. The toilet is a squat-style, vacuum-truck (pit) toilet, and going to the toilet at night was frightening for the children.
The Chikuma River is nearby, and I'm told my grandfather was sometimes asked to make fishing flies (kebari). I heard they caught fish very well. The house is full of memories of my grandfather, but it has been vacant for a long time, so I would like to pass it on to someone who wants to maintain and use it. The building needs maintenance. I am also happy to discuss demolition and similar matters.

上田市と戸倉上山田温泉の間にある町です。祖父母が老後を過ごしていた家です。祖母が早くに亡くなったので長く祖父は一人でこの家に暮らしていました。決まった時間に起きて裏の山を散歩し夜は一合の晩酌をする。というような規則正しい生活をしていたので94歳まで生きました。
玄関、9畳の和室、台所、風呂場は増築しています。四畳半の和室は以前に掘りごたつを使っていたようです。庭は狭いですがちょっとした家庭菜園ができます。祖父はトマト、きゅうり、なす、へちま、みょうが、ネギ、しそ、かぼちゃ等を育てていました。上田盆地の夏は日中暑いのでそうめんにすることもあり庭からみょうがとしそとりをするのが私の役目でした。祖父の育てていたみょうがの中に入って花芽を摘むのが楽しかったです。
冬は隙間風があり家族でこたつに足を入れて寝ていました。寝息が白く立ち昇るほどです。トイレは汲み取り式の和式便座で子供には夜のトイレは恐怖でした。
近くに千曲川があるので祖父は毛鉤の製作を頼まれることもあったそうです。それがまたよく釣れると聞きました。そんな祖父の思い出が詰まった家ですが空き家になって長いので手入れして使いたいと思われる人にお譲りします。建物は手入れが必要です。取り壊し等の相談にのります。
