Description
This is the family home of my late wife. The house was inherited by my parents-in-law from the previous generation and was built in 1881 (Meiji 14), giving it a history of more than 100 years. I would like to pass it on to someone who is interested in architecture and who will value the town of Onan and its local environment.
It has been more than 20 years since I first visited Onan. I read the book "Village Pride" by Hidehito Teramoto, and with nostalgic feelings I also made a furusato nozei (hometown tax) donation. I would be glad if my late wife's family home could be of use in some way to preserve the local environment. I do not want this house to end up as just a vacant house in my generation; I want to set a path for it to be put to good use in the future. I hope it can be of use to people across Japan who are interested in kominka (traditional old house) architecture and in revitalizing rural areas.
The house was built in 1881, and the beams and other timbers are 100-year-old aged wood. The original kamado (traditional cooking stove) from that time remains. Gas can of course be used. The house appears to have been renovated several times, and the toilet has been converted to a flush toilet. The Buddhist altar is finished in gold leaf and lacquer, and could serve as an interior feature as it is. I have not seen the house for many years, so I expect some parts are damaged, but it is currently managed under the furusato nozei vacant-house management program.
