Description
In the evening, people on their way home from the shipyard would slide open the door and come in. In the back, my mother would hand over the microand wait for someone to sing their signature song. This house enjoyed that kind of time for many years.
When my mother ran a karaoke cafe here, local people came during the day to sing and chat, and in the evening and at night workers from the nearby shipyards would stop by. It was a place where there was always someone's voice, just like my mother, who loved talking with people. Afterwards, making use of the building, my brother and I started a lodging business offering rooms without meals, and we also completed the procedures required for running accommodation, including those for the lodging business licence and fire safety. Before the COVID period, it was used not only by domestic guests but also by travelers and cyclists visiting the Shimanami Kaido from overseas. What is interesting comes next: my brother made kamishibai (picture-card storytelling) based on local history here, performing it at elementary schools and holding exhibitions at the shop. My mother loved people, and my brother valued local history and drawing. Though their fields were different, both of them enjoyed connecting with others through this house.
You cannot see the sea from the house, but you can reach it in 3 minutes on foot. It is just the right distance to go fishing or take a morning or evening walk. If you walk another 10 minutes, there are spots with the sea views typical of the Shimanami area. It is a quiet residential area one street off the main road, and Hashihama Station is about 10 minutes away on foot along a flat road. There are many shipyards in the area, and on weekday mornings and evenings commuter cars, motorbikes and bicycles pass through.
On the registry, the building is a wooden, slate-roofed, 3-storey residence and shop of 177.04 m2 (about 53.55 tsubo). Because it has been extended repeatedly over a long period, it has a slightly curious and interesting layout that modern houses do not have. The bathroom is old-style tiled, there are marks from past roof leaks above the kitchen, and there are also spots under the eaves that should be considered for repair. To be honest, it is not a house you can move into and live in comfortably right away. That is exactly why I think it suits someone who enjoys DIY and renovation and wants to make it their own. As a home, of course, but also as a second house near the sea, an atelier or workshop, a base for hobbies, an office or a shop, there should be great freedom in how it can be used.
Property tax is about 18,000 yen per year, and the asking price is 3.6 million yen. Please check the condition of the building and the necessary repairs in person; if you would like to discuss the price, I am happy to listen. I have lived in the Kanto region for a long time and do not plan to move back into this house. Rather than leaving it as a vacant house, I hope the next owner can make use of this place, which my mother and brother each cherished in their own way, in a new form. I will handle viewings myself, so please feel free to contact me.
